Starting a blog

Hi.

I start my blog with an article titled [Han Sang-Ik, An authentic painter of North Korea]. I intend to share my favorite paintings of Han Sang-ik(1917~1997) with many people. Especially, I would like to introduce his paintings and activities which would have been created through the agnony between art and regime as a North Korean artist, even though this introduction may be limited.

The first reason why it may be 'limited' is because I am South Korean. There is only a limited access to references available on the internet, and I can't even go to North Korea for research because of the reality of a divided country. Secondly, I am just an art lover collecting paintings of Han Sang-ik, but I have no knowledge of art. 

It is frustrating to have no previous knowledge and reference to be found due to the special nature of the division of country, but it can be rather fun to contentrate on the interaction, imagination and appreciation of the paintings. First of all, I am going to post articles based on my collection of works one by one, and I would like to add the commonly known anecdotes, literature, or opinions as an ordinary viewer. And later, I would like to research and post other famous paintings of Han Sang-ik when I learn the legal data collecting method related to copyright. 

The reason why I first fell in love with Han Sang-ik's work was becasue of a tree painting depicted with simple brush strokes. It was one of several works titled 'On the way to school' that I saw on Naver cafe(Online community). The way he depicted the trees was beautiful, and also it was surprising that I could feel his personal emotion with only few simple brush strokes of the painting. In North Korea, even though each artist has his/her own style of painting, it is rare for a painter to express his/her feelings through painting. The North Korean painting usually depicts to lead the public sentiment rather than the artist's expression of his or her own. The art of North Korea is supposed to be universally painted so that the same content can be delivered, but Han Sang-ik's work is showing the individual sensibility, technical skill, and its extraordinary life energy in it, which is quite rare, and this was the reason why I started paying attention to Han Sang-ik's work.

Since I started researching about Han Sang-ik's work, I have found that there have been many conflicts between his pursuit as an fine artist and the demands from the state and the regime, and that despite the many difficulties of the periodical time, he has kept his soul as an artist until the end, and as a result of his sacrifice, he acheived the Korean style of oil painting which was a unique painting style, and he became almost the only artist whose artistic autonomy was overlooked by the regime in North Korea.

블로그를 시작하며

안녕하세요?
[한상익, 북한의 순수 미술가]를 제목으로 블로그를 시작하게 되었습니다.
제가 좋아하는 이분 작품을 많은 분께 알리고 공감하고자 하는 목적입니다.
특히 북한에서 활동한 화가로서 체제와 예술 사이의 고뇌 끝에 탄생되었을 그의 작품과 그 알려진 활동을  제한적으로 나마 소개할 수 있다면 좋겠습니다.

'제한적'일수 밖에 없는 첫 번째 이유는 저는 남한사람이기 때문입니다. 접근할 수 있는 자료는 인터넷에서 검색되는 한정적으로 공개된 자료 밖에 없고, 저는 분단된 현실 때문에 북한을 가볼 수도 없습니다. 두 번째 이유로는 저는 우연찮게 한상익 작품이 좋아 컬렉팅하고 있는 매니아일뿐 미술학적 지식이 전혀 없기 때문입니다.

이처럼 기존에 아는 지식도 없고 분단국가의 특수성으로 더 알아볼 수 있는 자료도 없으니 답답한 면도 있습니다만, 오히려 작품을 더 집중해서 교감하고 상상하며 감상하는 재미도 있습니다.
우선 제가 소장한 작품 위주로 하나씩 올리며 일반적으로 알려진 일화나 문헌내용 또는 평범한 감상자로서의 의견을 곁들이려 합니다. 그리고 나중에 저작권 관련된 합법적인 스크랩 방법을 익히게 되면 이분의 다른 유명한 작품들도 검색해서 올리고 싶네요.

제가 한상익(韩尚益) 작품에 처음 빠지게 된 계기는 간략한 붓터치로 표현된 나무 그림 때문이었습니다.
네이버 카페에서 본  '학교 가는 길'이라는 제목의 여러 작품중 하나였는데 나무 표현이 예쁘게 다가오기도 했지만, 간략한 붓터치 임에도 개인의 감정이 그대로 느껴지는 게 의외였습니다.
북한에도 화가마다 각자의 화풍은 있지만, 화가의 감정이 표현되는 작품은  흔치 않습니다. 화가의 감정표현보다는 대중의 감정을 이끌도록 표현되는 게 북한그림입니다.  누가 보더라도 같은 내용이 전달되도록 보편적으로 그려야 하는 게 북한의 미술인데 드물게 개인의 감성과 기교가 깃들어 있고 그 내공도 범상치 않아 그때부터 눈 여겨 본 것 같습니다.

그 후 한상익 화가에 대해 관심을 가지며 국가 및 체제의 요구와 순수 예술가로서의  추구 사이에 많은 갈등이 있었고, 시대적 변화의 많은 어려움에서도 드물게 끝까지 예술가로서의 영혼을 지켰고, 그 희생의 결과로 우리식 유화라는 독특한 화풍을 이루게 되어 북한에서도 예술가적 자율성을 눈감아준 거의 유일한 화가가 되었음을 알게 되었습니다.

아주 작지만 이쁘고 감성적인 '송도원 해수욕장'을 첫 그림으로 올립니다. 제가 좋아하는 나무 표현도 보이네요.
